Head of Procurement – Build It From Scratch | Challenge the Norm in Rail Innovation

Derby HQ | Hybrid | Full-time | £55,000 – £60,000 + Benefits

Be bold. Build from scratch. Challenge everything.

This isn’t a traditional procurement role — and we’re not looking for a traditional procurement leader.

We’re exclusively recruiting for a major innovator in the UK rail industry, known for disrupting the market through rolling stock movement, locomotive spot hire, and high-profile charter train operations. With state-of-the-art tri-mode Class 93 locomotives about to transform the UK’s freight and passenger future, we’re looking for a Head of Procurement to lead from the front.

This is a rare opportunity to create a procurement function from scratch — with the full support of the Senior Leadership Team and freedom to build systems your way.

The Opportunity:

Establish, shape, and lead a brand-new procurement function

Develop and deliver a clear procurement strategy aligned to a fast-scaling operation

Own supplier relationships, lead negotiations, and ensure value across all purchases

Create smart, agile systems that enable rather than restrict

Drive transformation — from compliance and cost control to contract innovation

Support cutting-edge projects including next-gen locomotives, infrastructure, and operations

We Need a Challenger:

This role needs someone who:

Challenges the status quo

Owns the systems rather than works within outdated ones

Is dynamic, questioning, and bold in decision-making

Brings a "bypass the system" mentality when needed to get things done right

Thrives in a fast-moving, entrepreneurial business

What You’ll Bring:

5+ years of procurement leadership in rail, transport, or engineering sectors

Strategic thinker with a practical, action-driven mindset

Degree in Supply Chain, Business, Engineering or similar

CIPS (working toward L5 or MCIPS preferred)

Advanced negotiation, contract management, and supplier development skills

Experience across public and private sector procurement (desirable)

Knowledge of rail components, rolling stock, or infrastructure procurement is a bonus

What’s In It For You:

Freedom to build a procurement function your way

Be part of a company at the heart of UK rail innovation

Private Healthcare

8% Company Pension Contribution

33 Days Holiday (incl. Bank Holidays)

Free On-Site Parking

Agile working hours & hybrid model

Supportive, down-to-earth team with a family-first culture

This is more than a job.

It’s a chance to leave a legacy, build something new, and lead with autonomy in one of the UK’s most forward-thinking rail companies.

If you’re bold, curious, and not afraid to challenge how things have always been done — we want to hear from you.
