Are you an experienced Health and Safety Advisor with a background in energy from waste, biomass, power generation, utilities, process engineering or heavy industry?
We are recruiting for a proactive and practical Health and Safety Advisor to join an established UK energy business at its operational facility in Tyseley, Birmingham.
This is a highly visible, site-based position where you will work closely with the Operations Director, Plant Management Team and Group Head of Health and Safety.
You will take ownership of day-to-day health and safety activity, promote behavioural safety and help embed a proactive culture of compliance and continuous improvement across the site.
The role includes incident investigation, contractor management, audits, inspections, risk management, ISO 45001 and extensive involvement during planned plant outages.
The Health and Safety Advisor role
As part of the site management team, you will become the principal source of day-to-day health and safety advice and support.
You will provide practical guidance to employees, managers and contractors while ensuring plant operations comply with current UK legislation, Group policies and site procedures.
Your responsibilities will include:
Supporting the Operations Director with legislative, Group and site health and safety requirements
Acting as the main site contact for health and safety advice, compliance and behavioural safety
Promoting a positive and continuously improving health and safety culture
Implementing, developing and reviewing site health and safety policies and procedures
Supporting the implementation and ongoing management of ISO 45001
Leading and supporting internal health and safety audits and workplace inspections
Monitoring site health and safety performance and identifying areas for improvement
Producing weekly health and safety reports for senior site and Group management
Chairing the site Health and Safety Committee
Representing the site at Group health and safety forums
Leading and supporting incident and near-miss investigations
Completing root-cause analysis and ensuring lessons learned are communicated
Monitoring corrective and preventative actions through to completion
Reviewing contractor health and safety competence
Monitoring contractor compliance with RAMS, permits and site procedures
Delivering and overseeing site health and safety inductions
Managing and developing incident-management and emergency-response systems
Supporting daily operational and outage-planning meetings
Liaising with clients, contractors, regulators and external bodies
Providing practical guidance on safe systems of work and operational risk
Planned outage responsibilities
During planned plant outages, you will play a central role within the outage-management team.
This will include:
Developing and obtaining approval for the outage health and safety plan
Supporting CDM arrangements and compliance
Auditing permits, risk assessments and method statements
Conducting inspections, investigations and safety surveillance
Monitoring contractor compliance throughout the outage
Attending outage meetings and advising operational teams
Agreeing arrangements for out-of-hours health and safety support
Producing detailed health and safety summaries for outage reports
Skills and experience required
To be considered for this Health and Safety Advisor position, you should have:
A minimum NEBOSH General Certificate in Occupational Health and Safety
Previous health and safety experience within energy from waste, biomass, power generation, utilities, process manufacturing or heavy industry
Experience working within a live operational, engineering or industrial environment
Strong knowledge of UK health and safety legislation and recognised best practice
Knowledge of ISO management systems, ideally including ISO 45001
Experience conducting workplace audits, inspections and risk assessments
Practical incident-investigation and root-cause-analysis experience
Experience managing contractor health and safety compliance
The confidence to challenge unsafe practices constructively
The ability to influence employees, managers and contractors at all levels
Strong organisational skills and the ability to manage competing priorities
Excellent written and verbal communication skills
Good IT and reporting skills
Membership of an appropriate professional health and safety body
Flexibility to travel occasionally to other Group sites
An auditor qualification, formal incident-investigation training or previous experience acting as a senior or lead investigator would be advantageous.
