Cumberland(/ˈkʌmbərlənd/KUM-bər-lənd) is an area ofNorth West Englandwhich washistorically a county. The county was bordered byNorthumberlandto the north-east,County Durhamto the east,Westmorlandto the south-east,Lancashireto the south, and theScottishcounties ofDumfriesshireandRoxburghshireto the north. The area includes the city ofCarlisle, part of theLake DistrictandNorth Pennines, and theSolway Firthcoastline.

Cumberland had an administrative function from the 12th century until 1974, when it was subsumed intoCumbriawithWestmorlandas well as parts ofYorkshireandLancashire. It gives its name to theunitary authority areaofCumberland, which has similar boundaries but excludesPenrith.
